CASINA
CINQUEPOZZI

When you arrive at Casina Cinquepozzi, you will find yourself surrounded by a dazzling landscape of diverse cultivation, spread over a never-ending patchwork of rolling fields.

The property teems with biodiversity. 40 acres of orchards, olive trees, an agroforest, a recently planted woodland, a vast garden of plants you can eat, and vineyards. All forming a project of regenerative agriculture. The artisanal, but scientifically managed, azienda agricola produces organic wine, olive oil, vegetables, fruit, and pasta that will fill your plate and revive your body.

Walk the gravel path toward the villa and you will meet three solitary gelsi, mulberry trees, and a majestic pine which stand like our private sentinels at the path’s end.

Get a little closer and, on one side, you will come across ancient stone pens for livestock, which are strangely reminiscent of a roman aqueduct. On the other side, a well, dug centuries ago, lies at the foot of the main staircase to the villa.

A place where dreams have been coming true over three centuries.

The villa’s origins trace back to the early 1700s. A stone memorial above the entrance to the rural chapel names the brothers Giovan Battista and Vincenzo Trolio as the likely founders. Giovan was a prete capitolare, a prominent priest, and the wealthiest citizen of Putignano in the 1720s. Vincenzo was a capitano, suggesting he might be a town governor, a military captain or he just liked the sound of it!

The property hummed along in the loving care of the family’s descendants until the 21st century. We purchased it from them in 2021.

Step inside the building and you’ll find a very unusual mansion, sporting rustic quirks and the indulgences of a villa. Animals once roamed the ground floor and the family dwelled one story up in the ‘piano nobile’, the noble floor. The barrel-vaulted top floor provided storage for the farm’s produce.

While the idea of letting animals wander the ground floor had some appeal, especially with our kids, we opted for human comforts instead! During the renovation, we took great care in using original tooling and craftwork to breathe new life into the old features. To our delight, we unearthed the occasional secret. There was a hidden room. And right under the crumbling plaster of the barrel-shaped vaults we found numerous bubuli, rarely-used terracotta cylinders inserted in ceilings to insulate and lighten structures in old Puglia.

Casina Cinquepozzi is our family’s holiday home, a working farm and is also open to guests who want to experience its timeless beauty. Or simply lounge by a pool under an Italian sky with a glass of our wine in your hand while being taken care by our incredible staff.
